How bin collection days work in Australia
Collection day is set by your council, not by a sticker. Use the council's own waste page to confirm the date.
Bin Stickers Australia is an independent sticker supplier. We are not a council or government waste service. Confirm collection days, missed bins and replacement bins on your council's official website.
Where the official day is published
Search for your council name plus "bin collection" and open the result on the council's own domain, usually a .nsw.gov.au, .vic.gov.au, .qld.gov.au, .wa.gov.au, .sa.gov.au, .tas.gov.au, .nt.gov.au or .act.gov.au address, or the council's published website. Common tools on those pages:
- A waste calendar or PDF for the year, often split by suburb or collection zone.
- An address search that returns the next rubbish, recycling and organics dates.
- A note about public-holiday changes. Many councils bring the day forward or push it back when the usual day is a holiday. The calendar is the source for that, not a general rule.
What is usually collected
Names vary by state, but most kerbside services include:
- General waste — the rubbish bin. Often collected weekly.
- Recycling — mixed recyclables, or separate paper, glass and plastic streams in some areas. Often fortnightly.
- Green waste or garden organics — garden clippings. Often fortnightly or monthly.
- FOGO — food organics and garden organics together, where the council offers that service. See what FOGO means.
Your street may not have every service. A neighbouring council can use a different bin colour and a different week. Do not copy a calendar from another suburb.
What to put out
- Put the bin out the evening before, or by the time your council specifies, with the lid closed.
- Leave space between bins and keep them clear of trees, cars and power poles so the arm can lift them.
- Wheels and handle usually face your property, with the lid opening toward the street. Your council page will say if they want a different orientation.
- Bring the bin in after collection. A bin left out is easier to lose, and some councils fine bins that stay on the kerb.
Collection notes by state
Lid colours and who runs the service differ. Each page below links to the government site it quotes. The collection day is still your council’s, except in the ACT.
How a sticker fits in
A bin number or waste-type sticker does not change your collection day. It makes the bin easier to identify if it is moved, and it can remind the household which bin is general waste, recycling or FOGO. If the bin was not emptied, use missed collection and contact the council.
